Tools for preventing arguments during your family vacation, and productively working through them when they inevitably pop up.

We used to have some of our biggest arguments while traveling. The combination of a foreign environment, fatigue and the free time to think about our issues created combustible situations. Once we became aware of this unfortunate trend, we took steps to reduce its frequency.

Our first step in curtailing the travel arguments was recognizing the conditions that triggered discord, like fatigue and hunger. We then made a pact to hold off on expressing our irritation until we were fed and rested. Often, the seed of the potential argument had disappeared when our bodies and minds had been taken care of.

While the “no arguing when we’re hungry and tired” thing significantly helped, it didn’t end all squabbles. So to minimize the damage done by verbalized discontent we set some ground rules, which were so effective we now use them for all arguments, regardless of location.

Related Articles

1. Stay on topic

An argument about where to eat can easily spiral into bigger, sticker areas that really don’t need to be brought into a discussion about whether to grub at the sandwich shop or local pub. If one of you veers off topic, offer a gentle reminder to come back to the original subject.

2. No name calling

Keeping unkind labels out of our mouths allows conversations to be more civil and less triggering. But this is easier said than done, as it’s so easy to let phrases like, “you’re so irritating,” “you’re the worst listener,” or “you’re selfish” spill out. #3 and #4 will offer tools to help you avoid gut-reaction talking.

3. Stick to “I” statements

When expressing your feelings, prevent finger pointing by starting your sentences with “I” instead of “you.” For example, instead of saying, “You always take forever to get ready in the morning and it’s your fault we’re late,” you could say, “I feel frustrated when it takes us a long time to get out the door in the morning. What could we do to change that?”

In this situation you’re focusing on how a certain circumstance or action makes you feel, instead of labeling or placing blame on the other person. This vocabulary adjustment often leads to a productive conversation, versus an “I want to prove I’m right” battle of the wills.

4. Pausing before responding

The previous suggestions are much easier to implement when you take a pause before responding. Often, when we say the first thing that comes into our mind during a tricky discussion it’s laced with defensiveness.

In addition, it takes an emotion 90-seconds to move through the body. So if something your family member says triggers a burst of anger, count to 90 in your mind before responding. This will feel forced and awkward at first but can save you from saying something you’ll regret.

5. Moving your bodies while talking

Going on a walk during tense discussions can help anger, frustration and other limiting emotions flow out of you. When we stay stagnant, the emotions stay stagnant and seriously limit our ability to move forward – so instead, make yourself physically move forward. In addition, walking in the environment that you worked so hard to get to will likely add a fresh perspective and serenity to your conversation.

Happy fight-free trails y’all!

Step-by-step guide to organizing + relishing the perfect babymoon.

Babymoon: A last hurrah for you and your partner before diving into the magical-tumultuous-confounding waters of parenthood. We’re all about babymoons, so much so that we’ll probably do another one before baby #2, even though babymoons are typically reserved for first timers. But, pshh. We’re doin’ it.

Our love for this variety of trip stems from its ability to pull you out of the to-do-list-filled prep that comes along with pregnancy (or preparing for the arrival of an adopted child), and allows you and your partner to step back and look at the bigger picture of your life thus far, and your dreams and fears about the future.

In addition, a babymoon is the perfect time to chill the F out. You get to stop dealing with endless Amazon deliveries, fielding texts about the baby shower, and figuring out how to finagle more maternity leave out of your boss. Instead, you get to say yes to couples massages, stay in bed all day with room service and HBO, or explore an area that won’t be as easy to navigate with a little in tow. This is the ideal reset button, allowing you to flow into the third and fourth trimester feeling more centered, serene and ready to do the damn thing.

To help ensure your babymoon is all that and more, move through the following steps.

Note: Before you book a trip, run it by your care provider to ensure it doesn’t pose any risks for your unique situation.

Related Articles

1. Make a list of your dream destinations.

What are the locations you’ve always dreamed of exploring? As you write them down, don’t censor yourself, just write every wild and wonderful destination you’ve fantasized about. And sure, you can have your partner make his or her own list.

2. Now cross off the locations that have Zika, and other such pregnancy threats.

Because you want the babymoon to be relaxing, skip areas that could expose you to Zika, malaria, dengue or other not-good diseases. In addition, if you think a certain location would make you concerned for your safety, cross it off the list.

Cruise Tip: If you’re considering a cruise, know that most cruise lines prohibit women who are more than 24 weeks pregnant from boarding.

3. Next, eliminate sites that primarily offer activities you can’t partake in.

If you love skiing, but are too pregnant to partake, heading to a location like Vail or Mammoth might irritate you – unless your favorite part of skiing is the post-snow hot chocolate and cuddle by the fire… So as you analyze your remaining destinations, review whether or not you’ll feel bummed about not being able to join in on the activity the locale is known for.

4. Then, choose from your remaining options.

Now that you’ve whittled down your list, you’ve hopefully ended up with babymoon destinations that are safe, and not envy-producing. With your partner, discuss the remaining areas, pinpointing the one that tickles your travel fancy. And because some of us have to think about funds (especially with a baby on the way) take into account the following step…

5. Determine your budget.

Unfortunately, it takes money to travel, and sometimes lots of it. While we’re all about splurging on a babymoon, as we think it’s honeymoon-level-important, we also don’t want you to spend your entire vacation stressing about how much you’re spending. So, take a realistic look at your finances and determine how much you can spend on this trip, without putting yourself in a state of financial panic.

With your travel budget in hand, start mapping out the structure of your babymoon. For example, this budget can help you determine whether you can fly business or economy, what type of accommodations you can swing, how many nights you can stay, which restaurants you can frequent, and the activities (here’s looking at you spa services) you can indulge in. With all that said, if you find your budget doesn’t allow you to enjoy your selected destination the way you’d like, consider going back to step #4.

6. Plan the trip for your second trimester.

As most women aren’t given the go ahead to fly during most of their third trimester, and the first trimester is often consumed by uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms, it’s wise to plan the babymoon for the second trimester – a period known as the “Golden” trimester, when many women get a burst of energy.

If you can only swing a trip in the third trimester, know that while it’s usually safe to travel by car during this time, issues like back discomfort and having to pee every 90-seconds can make a road trip not fun. But as we said before, run the trip by your care provider, regardless of your trimester.

7. Book an aisle seat near the bathrooms.

As you’ve probably noticed, pregnancy makes you have to pee (or at least feel like you have to pee) a lot. Do yourself a sold by selecting an aisle seat that’s a few rows away from the bathroom, so you don’t have to sit right by it, but also don’t have to spend more than 10-seconds getting there.

8. Board the plane early.

When the flight attendant makes the “Anyone needing additional time to board can now proceed to the gate” announcement, get on it. As lovely as it is standing in an antsy queue while holding all your carry-ons, you can skip this joy by pulling the pregnancy card, which we’re all about.

However, as some airlines don’t freely offer up this courtesy, speak with the gate attendant ahead of time to see if they’ll let you slide in before the masses converge on the line. It’s hard to say no to a lady growing a baby.

9. Bring nausea soothers on the plane.

Pregnant women barf, or get so nauseous they wish they could just barf and get it over with. It’s really not fun when this happens, especially on an airplane. While you’ll want to have nausea soothers for the entirety of your trip (and pregnancy) they’re mega-important on an airplane, or that car you have to get in after the plane.

Minimize nausea, and replace the nutrients you lose if you do up-chuck, by bringing along a survival kit with the following…

-Refillable water bottle and a baggie of pink Himalayan sea salt. A pinch of the salt in your water helps with water absorption. Dehydration can intensify morning sickness, so if in doubt, sip your water.

-Electrolyte packets

-Chamomile tea

-Bananas, as they’re gentle on the stomach and replace the potassium you lose when you vomit.

-Ginger chews

-Sprite or Ginger Ale

-Crackers. Going too long without eating can enhance nausea, so nibble on crackers even if food sounds like the last thing you want to put in your mouth.

-Peppermint essential oil. Put a few drops on a tissue and inhale.

10. Make sure you have an ample supply of any needed medications.

Load up on your needed prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, herbal and dietary supplements, and vitamins before you depart. Even if you’re not going to a foreign location, it can be a pain in the uterus to run out of an important med and have to track down a replacement when you just want to read those gossip mags by the pool. Bring enough for the entirety of your trip, plus an extra week’s supply in case you’re delayed in returning home.

11. Have a plan for if special circumstances arise during the trip.

While you’ll likely have an emergency-free babymoon, pregnancy is filled with surprises, which is why you’ll want to research if there are hospitals or clinics near your accommodations, and what type of care they’re equipped to provide. If you’re staying in a more remote location, ask about their protocol for getting guests emergency medical care. For example, when I lived on Roatan, Honduras, there was a service that provided helicopter transport from the island to the hospital on the mainland.

12. Choose accommodations that will pamper you.

Regardless of how laid-back you are about travel when you’re not pregnant, having a baby growing in you means you have every right to up your standards and select accommodations that feature that plush king bed, Egyptian cotton sheets, soak tub and spa that caters to pregnant ladies. Don’t worry, you can go back to backpacking and sleeping in a coffin shaped tent after baby’s born… or maybe not.

13. Don’t be shy about mentioning the babymoon.

Much like what can happen on a honeymoon, resorts, restaurants, and other vacation service providers will sometimes offer a complimentary room upgrade, free dessert, or other special perks to commemorate your milestone trip. So slip in the fact that you’re on your babymoon when talking to such a person – no shame in that game.

14. Research the area’s pregnancy-friendly activities.

While you can’t ski, scuba dive, hang glide or say yes to most thrill-inducing activities, look into the pastimes you can partake in, like sightseeing, nature walks, low key yoga, pool lounging (lots of pool lounging) and other chill pursuits that will make you feel like you’re making the most of the babymoon, while not pushing it too hard. Speaking of not pushing it…

15. Pad your itinerary with ample downtime.

It can be easy to overextend yourself on vacation, especially when you’re in an area you’re craving to explore. Ensure you have the stamina for the activities you really want to do by giving yourself plenty of time for rest and sex (?!)

16. Use the babymoon as an opportunity to get deep with your partner (and no, not just like that.)

A babymoon is prime time to dive into the conversations you and your partner have been too busy or overwhelmed to engage in. As the trip will hopefully offer ample time to think, talk, ponder and talk some more, you can get deep into expressing your concerns and excitements about what a baby will mean for your relationship, social life, careers and beyond, how you’ll want to navigate the changes, or anything else that’s been tickling the back of your mind, but you keep brushing away.

These conversations will not just send you into the remainder of your pregnancy, and the beginning of parenthood, with more calm and clarity, but will also serve as a powerful bonding opportunity for you and your special person.

17. Hire a photographer.

As you’re likely looking pregnant in your second trimester, and are hopefully at your most relaxed in your gorgeous babymoon destination, this is an ideal time and place to have a prenatal photo shoot. Before you depart for the getaway, research the area’s best photographers and book a session.

How couples visiting Boston’s iconic Kenmore Square can craft a romantic, enriching + delicious getaway.

Transformed from swamp land in the 1700s, Boston’s culturally-rich Kenmore Square is now a lively hub thrumming with the energy of Boston University students, offering easy access to Commonwealth Avenue Mall that exudes mega-Boston vibes (especially in Fall when the leaves blaze with color), and featuring a short walk to the iconic Fenway Park and other historic hotspots.

While Boston offers plenty for the entire family to enjoy, Kenmore Square feels especially suited for couples getting away on a babymoon, honeymoon, or “why not” vacation without the kids. This adult time allows space to savor strolls by vine-kissed Georgia and Federal style buildings, an exploration of the eclectic plots in Fenway Victory Gardens, people watching on a park bench with a fresh pastry and cappuccino, or a long gourmet meal at one of the area’s many acclaimed eateries.

To ensure you get the most out of this legendary locale, without feeling overwhelmed with activity to-dos, we’ve pulled together a highly-curated list of where to sleep, eat + explore in and around Kenmore Square.

Sleep

While there are numerous stellar hotels and vacation rentals around Kenmore Square, we only listed one, as this spot is a must if you’re splurging on a full-on Boston immersion.

Hotel Commonwealth

From its grand lobby dripping in refined elegance, to the large paintings depicting classic events like the Boston Marathon, seats from Fenway Park, and other Boston Red Sox memorabilia, this famous hotel is all-things-Boston wrapped up in one massive, architecturally stunning structure. While many accommodations feel removed from the spirit of the city, as most hotel rooms are pretty generic, the rooms and suites at Hotel Commonwealth allow you to perch in your window seat, or sip champagne on your balcony, as you look down on the constant happenings of Commonwealth Avenue, or gaze on Fenway Park, envisioning the innumerable landmark moments that were birthed on that field.

Beyond the sights, the plush furniture and décor in the rooms are supremely chic, making it easy to envision Boston greats like John and Abigail Adams sitting around making important power-couple decisions in the room. Essentially, you constantly feel that you’re getting the most out of your Boston sojourn when you’re staying in this storied establishment.

Eat

As the culinary scene in Boston is world-renowned, and highly competitive, you can be sure any eatery that has lived to celebrate numerous birthdays has something special going. Luckily, many such restaurants reside in Kenmore Square, offering travelers easy access to gourmet nosh.

Eastern Standard

As soon as you walk through the heavy doors of this brasserie-style restaurant, you’re hit with a wave of old world charm that makes you feel that by simply existing in the restaurant you now possess the poise of the elite from a glamorous bygone era. However, despite the dignified environment, the staff does not put on airs, offering each patron attentive and courteous service. This attentiveness is especially handy as you work to decipher the elaborate cocktail menu, which reads like an ode to the alchemy of mixology.

While you can’t go wrong with any of the drinkable art at Eastern Standard, the Cardini Highball is especially mind blowing with its mix of tequila arette blanco, cocchi rosa, blackberry, lime, soda. And because this restaurant is attached to Hotel Commonwealth, you don’t have to worry about navigating back to your hotel if you go a little wild with cocktail sampling.

And then there’s the food. While menu items might at first seem fairly common, when you take a closer look you discover that the master chefs have come up with creative and delectable twists on favorite dishes. A few favorites include the Crab Imperial, Atlantic Monkfish, Cheesesteak, Sesame Tuna Salad, Mac n’ Cheese, and of course, the bread pudding.

Bruegger’s Bagels

To prep for a full day of cultural wandering, walk across the street from Hotel Commonwealth to this tried-and-true café where you can savor a butter or cream cheese-covered fresh bagel loaded with breakfast favorites like smoked salmon, eggs, bacon, chorizo, and more, then wash it down with a strong cup of coffee. Take your goods to the nearby park for a morning picnic, or snag a spot by the window and relish the fact that you’re not one of the many students rushing to class.

Island Creek Oyster Bar

Photo by Island Creek Oyster Bar

Another spot to score oh-my-wow cocktails, this elegant, yet unpretentious, establishment allows you to try the best of the seafood dishes New England is known for, such as lobster rolls, crab cakes, clam chowder, and fish n’ chips. All catch is incredibly fresh, and adorned with sumptuous favorites like premium butter, herbs, vegetables and other goodies, but the oysters are really where it’s at. The center of Island Creek Oyster Bar, an icy-world behind the glass of this extensive bar, features a smorgasbord that would make any oyster lover swoon. And the sensual, candlelit environment of this establishment makes it a utopia for romantic dinners.

Explore

Because Boston was the birthplace of many of the most significant moments in American history, it’s overflowing with amazing cultural attractions. To prevent your itinerary from exploding, like ours did the first time we said yes to Boston, we’ve narrowed down the list below to must-see landmarks within walking distance of Kenmore Square. If your trip will be longer than two or three days, you can hop in a rideshare and venture out into the wide world of Bostonian museums, monuments, and more.

Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Photo by Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

While we only had two hours to explore this palace of creation, founded in 1876, we wish we would have had two days. As it’s home to almost 450,000 works of art from almost every corner of the world, and seemingly endless eras, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston is a visual feast for those that appreciate paintings by masters like Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh, jewelry from ancient Egypt, Buddhist sculptures, thought-provoking pieces by contemporary artists and so much more you could spend years visiting this museum and see something new on each trip. In addition to the permanent collections, the museum is almost constantly introducing traveling exhibits.

Tips

* If you’ll be visiting on the weekend, skip the line by purchasing tickets here.

* To fully immerse yourself in the history of the museum’s treasures, utilize a mobile MFA Guide, or hop on one of the free one-hour guided tours.

* If you’ll have limited time, make a plan of attack before setting forth, making sure you don’t run out of time to see the exhibits you’re most keen on.

Fenway Victory Gardens

Almost the backyard of Hotel Commonwealth, the 7.5-acres that make up Fenway Victory Gardens house over 500 vibrant plots tended by Boston community members dedicated to infusing city life with the back-to-nature goodness of nurturing soil, covering plants when the freezes settle in, and pruning their plant babies. Beyond the vegetables, flowers and other foliage in the gardens are the eclectic collections of gnomes, mosaics, plastic figurines and other peculiar objects that make the plots double as mini-curio-museums.

While we didn’t see many people during our garden stroll, there were gaggles of geese that followed, and sometimes gently herded, us as we explored. One woman we spoke to, who has been gardening at Fenway Victory Gardens for over 50 years (!), said there’s a goose (who she’s named Zaly) that has learned her schedule and is waiting for her at the gate of her plot every morning.

Mary Baker Eddy Library and Mother Church

Photo of the Mapparium by The Mary Baker Eddy Library

Female empowerment abounds at this library and church that are the result of a woman who blew past bull sh*t convention in the name of pursuing her dream and bettering the world. The library chronicles the story of this wonder woman of yore, Mary Baker Eddy, who founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, during a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote. This story is revealed with letters, videos and other in-depth articles that will leave you awed. And then there’s the stunning church, adjacent to the museum, that’s the physical manifestation of what a purposeful vision and dogged passion can produce.

An additional draw of the library is the one-of-a-kind Mapparium, a three-story, stained-glass globe you can walk inside, immersing you in a surreal and thought-provoking experience.

Fenway Park Tour

Even if you’re not a baseball fan, touring this famed stadium, which has been home to the Boston Red Sox since 1912 and backdrop to famous scenes in movies like Field of Dreams, Good Will Hunting and Fever Pitch, is a bucket-list-worthy stop. The one-hour tour fills you in on all the greatest historic moments that have taken place within the stadium’s hallowed walls, and gives you a chance to sit on the Green Monster, the legendary wall that stands over 37-feet high and overlooks leftfield.

Lansdowne Street

The spot to go to join in on Boston nightlife, Lansdowne Street is filled with bars and clubs providing laid back environments to eat, drink, sing, dance and get silly. Favorite spots include Bill’s Bar, a five decade old haunt, Cask’n Flagon, the place for understanding how fiercely Bostonians love their Red Sox, House of Blues, The Landsdownes, a classic Irish Pub, and Jillian’s and Lucky Strike Lanes, a three story, 70,000-square-foot paradise for big kids wanting to revel in bowling, pool, arcade games, drinks and comfort food with contemporary twists.
