As many hotels charge over $15 for daily parking, and you (generally) have to eat every morning, accommodations that include parking and breakfast in their nightly rate can often be a better deal than hotels that don’t.

For example, let’s say hotel X charges $160 per night, but includes parking and breakfast, while hotel Y charges $145 per night, but doesn’t include the extras. If hotel Y charges $20/day for parking, and you spend $15/per person (for a family of four) every day for a hotel breakfast, you’ll actually be paying $225 per day at hotel Y.

Look Into Hotel + Airline Bundles

Many of the organizations mentioned above (e.g., credit card companies, USAA, etc.) offer discounted rates when you buy your airfare and hotel in a bundle (many also tack on a rental car, if needed.)

We’ve found the most luck with this through airline credit cards, as they often offer bundles in destinations where they frequently fly. For example, Alaska Airlines offer appealing bundles in various areas of Mexico, Costa Rica and Hawaii, in addition to Las Vegas, Disney World, and Disneyland.

Bypass Foreign Transaction Fees

When traveling to certain countries, your purchases could be subject to foreign transaction fees. To skip this price hike, use a credit card that doesn’t have foreign transaction fees. If you’re unsure whether or not the credit cards you use apply this fee, give them a call.

If you don’t have a credit card that waives these fees, consider applying for one (if the hassle is worth it for you). Popular credit cards that don’t have this fee include Capital One Venture Rewards (this is the card we have and love), Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred cards, Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority, and Bank of America Premium Rewards.

Take Over Another Traveler’s Reservation

While we don’t recommend booking accommodations last minute for a big trip, sites like RoomerTravel.com – which allows you to take over the reservation of a traveler who needs to cancel – can be a fun option for families who get a thrill from spontaneity. While this site also acts as a SkyScanner-esque booking service, the real deals are scored when your dates and preferences are flexible. If it were us, we’d make sure we had a reservation set well ahead of time for at least 2/3 of our trip, then might consider mixing it up last minute with a booking through this site.

Use a private browser when searching.

A strange and screwed up phenomenon that sometimes happens with online searches, specifically for flights, is that your search history is tracked, and for whatever reason the situation outlined above happens. Flights you’re interested in don’t consistently appear, and the rates seem to sporadically change.

To create a more consistent search experience, use a private (or “incognito”) browser window so your search activity can’t be tracked. It’s best to pull up a new private window for each search.

Search on the ideal day.

There is an odd, ever-changing algorithm that impacts the best time to buy domestic and international flights. Luckily, CheapAir.com is on it and offers great info for when to buy.

Currently, the prime-booking window for most domestic flights is around 20-120 days before your desired date of departure. You might still see some rate changes during this time but the shift will be minimal.

This range gets more specific when you narrow it down to the season you’ll be flying. For flights departing in Winter, try to book about 60 days in advance, Spring is 90 days in advance, Summer is about 50 days, and Fall is around 80 days in advance.

And then there’s international travel…

Search for a range of dates, or look at rates for the entire month.

Many third-party sites, and airline websites, let you compare fares for the few days before and after your selected dates, or will show you rates for the entire month (our favorite option.)

For example, let’s say your ideal day to fly out is a Sunday, but you have some flexibility. So you use the grid feature on a site like SkyScanner that allows you to compare rates for various days, and find that if you fly out on Tuesday instead of Sunday, you’ll be saving $600 in airfare for a family of four. This savings might just convince you to switch up your day of departure. Next, do the same type of search for your return.

Tip: Flights leaving Tuesday or Wednesday are often the most affordable, while Sunday is the most expensive.

Compare the rates on at least two third-party sites, with the rates on the airline’s website.

While you’ll usually find pretty similar rates across sites like SkyScanner, Momondo and Travelocity, it can be worth your time to compare flights across these sites, as occasionally, a great flight on one site might not show up on another.

Once you’ve found one or two ideal flights, compare the rate on the third-party site with the rate on the airline’s website. Sometimes airlines offer a special promotion or complimentary add-ons when you book directly through them.

In addition, Southwest flights are rarely listed on third-party sites, so you check their site to see if they offer a lower rate. But honestly, we rarely have luck with Southwest searches, and find flying them tricky if we’re flying as a family, because they don’t assign seats.

However, if we’re flying solo, Southwest is a fine choice.

Consider additional charges.

For many airlines, the airfare is just the foundation of the charges. On top of that foundation you’ll find additional fees for checked bags (sometimes even carry-on bags), additional charges to select your seat, and other add-ons you can select.

While certain charges, like paying $20 for extra legroom, aren’t always essential, there are others that might be a must. For example, if your family of four is going on a long trip, and every person will need to check a bag and carry something on, those fees add up. So if you’re comparing a Frontier flight, for example, that’s $350/person, and a United Flight that’s $375/person, you’ll likely be tempted to purchase the “cheaper” flight.

But when you dig deeper, you discover that Frontier charges $35/carry on bag and $30/ checked bag, while United only charges $25/checked bag and nothing for carry-ons. Now, your final rate for flying Frontier would be $415/person, while the United Flight would be $400/person (and offers more onboard amenities.)

It pays to research how airlines might nickel and dime you before booking. (Spirit Airlines is notorious for their litany of fees.)

Make sure you have ample transfer time, if you won’t be on a direct flight.

The anxiety that courses through a traveler’s body when they have 30-minutes to get from their seat on one plane to their seat on another (especially when they have little people to schlep across the airport) is just not worth it.

When selecting flights, we recommend coughing up the extra dough for a direct flight, if that’s an option. If it’s not, make sure you have at least two hours of transfer time between flights so issues like minor delays won’t derail your trip.

Use the multi-city search on SkyScanner.

If your trip will have many stops, let’s say Los Angeles – London (four-day stopover here) – Rome (three-day stopover) – Paris (five-day stopover) – Los Angeles, you can save by booking all your flights in one fell swoop through a site like SkyScanner. But this won’t always offer the cheapest rates. To cover your bases, take the multi-stop ticket price and compare it to the overall cost you add up after doing individual searches for each leg of the journey.

Receive savings notifications from airlines.

Watch for deals by signing up for email notifications with the major airlines that fly to the vacation destinations you’re interested in. If you don’t want your main Inbox bombarded by flight deals, open a travel-specific email account to use for these notifications.

Cash in points.

If you fly often, especially to a specific destination, it can be worthwhile to sign up for an airline credit card that offers points towards flights. We make frequent trips to Nicaragua and Costa Rica and have flown Alaska Airlines for many of those trips. So we now have an Alaska Visa that awards one point for every dollar spent, which we’ve used to receive a few “free” flights.

Alaska also offers an annual Buddy Pass where you can get an annual “buddy pass” that only requires you paying the taxes on a flight. For example, on a trip back from Central America, Bailey’s ticket was $450 while Eric’s Buddy Pass on the same flight was $120.

We also have a Capital One Venture Rewards card that awards two points for every dollar spent. These points can be used for a variety of airlines, hotels and rental car companies. It’s the primary card we use.

Adding to its appeal is the fact that you can sleep, eat + play here without shelling out buku bucks. These are the spots we found that offer the deepest wells of enjoyment for the least amount of funds.

Stay

As a tourist destination there’s everything from luxe, beachfront hotels to (usually) clean and cheap hostels in Cairns. As a family (usually) on a budget we land in the middle with our accommodation choices, wanting to be comfortable and have access to vacation-enhancing amenities, while also keeping an eye on how bloated our credit card balance is becoming. The following are our top choices for moderately-priced digs in Cairns.

Best Price: Palm Royale Cairns

Come to this not-luxury, yet definitely-not-a-hostel, hotel to score a super comfortable King-bed, pool-side room and mini-kitchenette (fridge, microwave, and electric kettle.) While the rooms are a bit dated, the bed and linens are soft and comfortable, and the newly-renovated bathrooms chic. And if the bathrooms are any indication of what the hotel will be like when renovations are complete, it will be a new (and possibly more expensive) place by the time we return. But as it’s a 5-minute drive to Cairns Esplanade, the prices will hopefully remain low to moderate.

And now to the pools. The balconies on most first-story rooms have gates opening onto one of the resorts two pools. Surrounded by tropical plants and loungers, and coated with blue tiles, the large pools are perfect for play and relaxation. One of the pools even features a large waterfall feature and resident massive-swan-floatie – a game changer for our kid. If you want to save some coin without sacrificing comfort, Palm Royale is for you.

Cost: $55 USD per night, and free parking

Best Amenities: Paradise Palms Cairns

A resort situated on the border of Kuranda State Forest and featuring a mini-golf course, Paradise Palm Cairns is the place to go for families wanting their accommodations to be a primary feature of their trip to Cairns. Beyond the mini-golf, guests can fill their time playing in the expansive swimming pool, napping on the sundeck, or exploring the impressive kids’ play area. An 18-hole golf course is another huge draw of this spot, however it was closed for renovations last time we checked – verify its status before you book here in hopes of playing real golf.

In regards to room options, they’re optimal for big families desiring at least a modicum of privacy, or couples wanting a mellow location to settle in. While there are basic hotel rooms, Paradise Palms also offers one to two bedroom apartments with kitchens, washer and dryer (huge score in Australia!), living rooms; free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and DVD players, balconies, minibars, and tea and coffee makers. It’s a one-stop-shop in almost every way.

If you came on vacation to not use a kitchen, the hotel offers a complimentary brekky and a nice restaurant (that even locals like), offering modern Australian and pan-Asian dishes.

The location is so-so, as it’s fairly close to many attractions (e.g., it’s 2.5 km from Clifton Beach and 4.1 km from Cairns Tropical Zoo) but not within walking distance to any hotspots.

Cost: $110 USD per night, and free parking

Best Location: Cairns Plaza Hotel

The supreme choice for those wanting to be close to the action but not right on top of it, Cairns Plaza Hotel sits on the lively Esplanade by the Coral Sea. Rooms aren’t extravagant, but as the hotel was recently upgraded it has a fresh ambiance, enhanced by the immaculate state of the quarters (at least before we travelers make a mess of it.) And then there are the sights from the ocean view rooms. While all rooms feature balconies that are lovely for some sunrise coffee drinking, the sea-facing verandas reveal dazzling views of the aquamarine waters.

Other pleasant amenities include the free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee makers, and a pool. If you’re hoping for additional space or amenities, the studios have kitchenettes, and the suites offer living areas off the bedrooms.

Cost: $110 USD per night, and free parking

Play

Being a seaside city in close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef means most play in Cairns revolves around water and partying, as diving tends to attract lots of wanderlusting backpackers. So if you love the aquatic realm, laid back nightclubs, or both, Cairns will be your jam.

Down Under Dives

After hours of research we pinpointed Down Under Dives as the most affordable and quality outfit for snorkeling or diving the Great Barrier Reef. The massive catamaran, custom-built in 2015, has three comfortable levels for passengers, the top being an open air, shaded deck with padded, wrap-around seating perfect for snoozing in the sun, and ample traditional seats for those wanting to look straight at the horizon (condolences.)

The second level features an indoor dry area with plush seating and tables, in additional to sunbeds in front of the cockpit. On the first level, guests can find the largest indoor dry area with seating, tables, a bar and a serving area for the abundant and healthy buffet lunch they provide. Complimentary tea and coffee are also available the entirety of the 8.5-hour trip (8am to 4:30pm.) And if you ask nicely the super friendly crew might sneak you some biscuits.

Speaking of the crew, they’re hyper-vigilant at making sure guests are comfortable and cared for if sea sickness comes calling. Many chatted up Hudson, with one even sitting for 20-minutes as he spun a tale for her.

And then there’s what we’re all there for, exploring the reef. Right when you board, you’re given a safety number and outfitted with snorkel and dive gear, and a storage cubby labeled with your safety number. Then, when you arrive at the first reef destination hydraulic dive platforms and steps are submerged into the water, offering an extremely easy way to enter with all the awkward gear. Both stops offer a fascinating tapestry of coral and sea life, so don’t forget your underwater cameras.

Cost: About $165/person for snorkeling, and up to $215/person for scuba diving (if you book through Trip Advisor.) There’s also a $20 reef-fee per person, paid upon check-in.

Tips

– Minimize seasickness by taking two to three ginger tablets before you board – and bring extra for the journey.

– The boat doesn’t provide complimentary towels or water bottles (only cups for tap water) so bring both.

– Bring loose comfortable duds, as putting tight, synthetic material on salt-soaked skin is a rare kind of horrible.

– If you chill easily, bring your own wetsuit, or rent one for $10 from Down Under Dives.

– While there aren’t showers on board, there are hoses by the dive gear – if you’re quick with it you can snag a rinse off.

Cairns Esplanade

The main strip for finding eateries ranging from white-tablecloth to food-court-chic, souvenir shops, primo people watching, a jogging path and skating ramps, the Esplanade is the place to go for immersing yourself in the Cairns culture. One of our favorite ways to enjoy this heart-of-Cairns is by having a swim at the lagoon, then posting up at an outdoor cafe with flat whites and gelato.

Cost: Free

Cairns Lagoon

Adjacent to Reef Fleet Terminal, this public, 4,800-square-meter salt water swimming pool makes you feel as though you’ve won a spot in the oasis of a luxury hotel for the perfect price of free. And if you were wondering about the cleanliness of a public pool, all water is brought in from the Trinity Inlet and filtered through a state-of-the-art filtration system.

Located right on Cairns’ Esplanade, and overlooking the sea, this manmade bay is a choice spot to cool off after a trip to the reef, wash away a hangover, or enjoy a refreshing float as the sun rises. Because it’s usually crowded afternoons and weekends, it’s best to take a dip earlier in the day, unless of course you thrive on the energy of crowds. To keep said crowds safe, there’s a lifeguard on duty 24/7.

You can enjoy Cairns Lagoon Thursday to Tuesday 6.00am to 9.00pm, and Wednesday 12.00pm to 9.00pm.

Cairns Botanic Gardens (also known as Flecker Botanic Gardens)

A lush wonderland composed of 38 hectares of native Australian flora, the Flecker Botanical Gardens is a gateway to a thorough education and immersion into the eclectic, rare, and in some cases, mind-boggling plant life of Australia. Nature lovers can expect to revel in the sights, sounds and smells of striking species of palms, gingers, orchids, bamboos, vines, aroids, tropical fruit trees and more.

As the gardens were established in 1886, many of the plants have had over a century to mature, creating a dramatic effect, especially when mixed with the numerous waterways, brooks and ornate bridges throughout the grounds. In addition, grassy lawns shaded by soaring trees create an ideal setting to picnic, especially when the garden’s exotic birds and butterflies dance against the backdrop of a cobalt blue sky.

Rare, must-see tropical plants in the gardens:

– Amorphophallus Titanum

A tropical flower weighing up to 70 kg with a single leaf that’s 7 meters across. This is one of the only two still existing in Australia. Be ready to snap some super phallic photos.

– Nepenthes

A carnivorous rainforest plant that forms a type of pitcher with its leaves. This pitcher contains sweet nectar that attracts insects and bugs that get stuck inside the plant, before it happily digests them.

Cost: Free, but donations are encouraged.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

One of the best ways to take in the Daintree – the world’s oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest – Skyrail Rainforest Cableway whisks curious travelers over the tops of this natural wonder that boasts a prehistoric ancestry 60 million years older than the Amazon. The gondolas hold up to six people and offer a birds-eye-view of the ancient canvas of rainforest between Smithfield (15-minute drive from Cairns) and Kuranda.

While the ride is captivating, you can deepen your awareness of the history of this land by partaking in the activities at the two rainforest stations on the route. The Red Peak station offers complimentary ranger-guided tours, a rainforest boardwalk loop, the Rainforest Discovery Zone, interpretive signage and lookouts. At Barron Falls station you can explore the CSIRO Interpretation Centre and historical precinct, and take envy-inducing photos of Barron Falls and Barron Gorge National Park from The Edge Lookout. You’ll also have the opportunity to journey through Kuranda, aka “Village in the Rainforest.”

Timing Tip: A round-trip ride takes about 2.5 hours, but we recommend giving yourself more time so you can enjoy the Red Peak and Barron Falls rainforest stations.

Cost: $82/adult, $41/child, and $205 for a family pass. If you’re hesitant to spend this much, know that your funds are going to a worthy cause, as this organization has won awards for its commitment to the highest standards of sustainable environmental performance.

We also recommend upgrading to a “Diamond View” gondola, as it has a glass bottom that’s exhilarating, with a splash of terrifying.

Eat

Being a destination that attracts travelers from every corner of the world, and is so appealing many of those travelers move there and start a business, Cairns offers a melting pot of restaurants. From Vietnamese to Italian, there’s something for everyone, regardless of your taste preferences and desire for culinary adventure.

Cairns Night Market and Food Court

If you’re looking for a cheap, easy and delicious meal, head to the food court on the Cairns Esplanade that has sushi, pho, a noodle bar, Chinese, a juice bar, a crepe shop, New Zealand ice cream, gelato, a waffle shop, and other random but delicious choices. In addition, the eateries just outside the food court offer kebabs, gelato, coffee and other yummy options that won’t set you back more than $30 for two people.

Grill’d Cairns

Grill’d Cairns is your spot if you’re craving a burger… even if you don’t eat beef. Every aspect of these burgers, from the bun to the produce, is top notch and the meat (or super yummy non-meat Beyond Burgers) are perfectly seasoned and just the right size. And do yourself a favor by ordering their sampler board of chips.

Ganbaranba Noodle Collosseum

Mega-affordable Japanese favorites like fresh, fully-loaded Ramen and gyoza, can be found here. If you’re in Cairns on a rainy day, Ganbaranba Noodle Collosseum is a cozy, inviting eatery to post up in. Making the experience all the lovelier is the friendly staff that will stop at nothing to ensure you have an amazing meal.

Tip: They only accept cash.

Snoogies Health Bar

A prime to-go joint for wellness seekers, Snoogies serves a wide array of healthy eats that accommodate every dietary preference, from gluten-free to vegan. Popular options include cold pressed juices and smoothies, nutrient-rich salads, a variety of wraps, ever-changing eats in their hot-food bar, and bliss balls. And oh, we almost forgot – they also accomplished the tricky feat of making their health food flavorful and non-chalkboard-esque.

Money. Blah. As a family living off a teacher and writer’s salary we know a lot about budgeting and gettin’ thrifty. And yet, despite our often scant bank account, Bailey and Hudson still have a taste for the fine life and like to save up for the occasional stay in a shnaz hotel, which is why you’ll find tips for everything from luxury to budget accommodations on this site.

Eric on the other hand, could happily stay in a tent on any and all trips, even if it’s snowing. No joke. So we get it. We get the need to not drain the bank account for a trip, yet sprinkle it with the amenities you desire.

This is the process we use to take a (sometimes painfully) honest look at our finances, and figure how much can be siphoned off for travel.

Timing Tip: If you’re planning a big trip, it’s wise to start planning about a year in advance so you’ll have ample time to save if the following activity results in a budget that can’t accommodate your travel preferences.

Figuring out the max amount you can spend on the trip.

• To do this, take a look at your annual household income, and determine your average monthly expenses for essential items. For example, groceries, rent or mortgage, insurance, education, medical care, retirement contributions and anything else that is more important to you than a vacation.

• Next, figure out what is left over. Let’s say you determine that annually, you have $25,000 left over after subtracting the essentials from your household income. If you want to invest in no extras but this one trip for the rest of the year, then you have $25,000 to spend on it. But we’ll take a wild guess and say there are other extras you enjoy like eating out, entertainment, a gym membership, taking the occasional weekend trip, buying gifts and other activities that add up. So…

• Make a list of all of your common extras and figure out (ballpark) how much you spend on each per year. Now what’s left of that $25,000? Let’s say there’s $5,000 remaining. Will this amount cover the accommodations, airfare, additional transportation, food, activities and insurance for your trip? We understand this may be a difficult question to answer before making decisions regarding accommodations, airfare and vacation activities, but this number can inform the travel choices you make. While there’s less wiggle room with airfare rates, you can often find lodging and extracurriculars that fit within your budget.

If you’re looking at that $5,000 (or whatever your number is) and think it just won’t be enough to cover the type of trip you’re planning, move on to the next step.

Discovering where you can save.

Reexamine the list of extras (e.g., entertainment, clothes, small trips, gym, etc.) that you came up with, and discuss with your family what extras you can all do without to save money for your trip. For example, for a surf vacation to Nicaragua Bailey gave up a frozen yogurt addiction and online shopping habit, Eric put the brakes on his hat and shoe procurement, and Hudson had to slow his roll with Lego collecting.

This “how can we save” conversation offers a juicy opportunity for your family to get clear on priorities, while the eventual commitment to the budget and agreed upon sacrifices heightens everyone’s level of dedication to the success of the adventure. And hey, a family who saves together stays together.

Store saved money in a set location.

To ensure the money you save on your sacrifices actually gets saved, it can be helpful to have an envelop (or other safe location) where you store the cash you would’ve spent on that Marvel Lego set, skateboard, dinner and a FroYo or anything else that’s not as important as your family adventure.

Hopping on a floating resort and cruising off to a corner of the world can be an excellent way to travel with the family. However, that cruise liner ad making you think a certain voyage will be a total steal can be misleading if you don’t know how to work the system – a system that’s a pro at getting cruise-goers to spend money.

We used to steer clear of cruises, thinking they were not-worth-it money traps. But after navigating monetary hiccups and confusions during our first few cruises, we were able to work out how to go on a cruise that was less than $800 per person, and included a final on-board bill of $0.

Before you book your next cruise…

1. Find a ship that leaves from a port near you.

The big save here is that if you live close enough to this port you won’t have to pay for airfare, and a hotel the night before or after the cruise.

Major cruise ship ports in the United States are located in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Honolulu, New Orleans, Boston, New York, Charleston, Norfolk and Galveston.

2. Set up a new email purely for travel deal notifications, and sign up for special-deals-emails from the cruise companies you’re interested in.

Most cruise lines are constantly offering an assortment of deals. However, the type of deal you need when you happen to look might not come up. For example, maybe you have young kids and are looking for a deal that allows kids to cruise for half off.

To ensure you’re able to catch the right deal at the right time, set up an email address used specifically for savings-alerts from the cruise lines you’re interested in traveling with. This way, your main inbox won’t be inundated with emails from cruise lines, and you can choose when you want to dive in to deal research. Make sure you don’t miss out on the deal you’re looking for by going through these emails about once a week.

3. Book last minute.

If you have the flexibility to travel on a whim, you can often find amazing last minute deals for cruise lines eager to fill their remaining rooms. For those dead set on a certain cruise line, particular ship, select destinations, or date range, this likely won’t be a good fit.

4. Reserve an interior room.

If you’re someone planning to spend ample time in your room, skip this suggestion and opt for a window or balcony room. But if your jam is getting up and at em’ and utilizing the ship’s numerous amenities, you’ll likely only be using your room for sleeping, in which case a room without a window will provide wonderful sleeping conditions and a big savings.

5. Buy your next cruise while you’re on a cruise.

Cruise lines have cleverly discovered that it’s much easier to get people to sign up for another cruise while they’re immersed in the goodness of the current one. To make this buy even more desirable, they often offer mega-deals for subsequent cruises. They’re banking on the whole “too good to refuse” philosophy, but it’s a win-win situation.

6. Skip the newer ships.

The newer and fancier a ship, the more likely it is to have a high price tag. If you’re purely cruising to enjoy the latest-and-greatest amenities, it might be worth it to you to spend the extra dough to get a room on say, Royal Caribbean‘s Symphony of the Seas. But if you’re primarily interested in the various destinations cruise ships take you, you might as well score a cost cut by booking on one of the older ships visiting the locales you’re into.

7. Request the removal of automatic gratuity.

Many cruise ships automatically add pretty hefty gratuities on your bill for the various on-board services you receive. For example, on a cruise to Cuba with Royal Caribbean we discovered that $100 dollars in gratuities had been added to our family’s bill for each day of our cruise – that’s $800. The service was good, but not that good. Most people just pay this, thinking they don’t have a choice. But if you simply ask the cruise ship to remove these charges before you close out your bill, they will. Then you have the freedom to tip the amounts you feel are fair.

8. Utilize the free dining options.

Cruise ships offer numerous free culinary choices, such as the infamous buffets, pizza or hot dog eateries, and the main dining rooms where you can eat a white-tablecloth breakfast and dinner. We’ve found this free food is just as good (at least most of the time) as the “additional cost” onboard restaurants. The same goes for the dessert and candy shops – skip these costs by getting your sugar fix at one of the complementary soft serve ice cream stations (!), or at a buffet offering a menagerie of sugar. In addition, you’re welcome to order as many desserts as you want during dinner in the primary dining rooms.

9. Calculate your beverage needs at least three months before you board.

All boats provide beverage plans offering the option of unlimited alcohol, specialty coffees and other non-alcoholic drinks, and bottled water. If you’re someone who plans on always having a drink of some sort in your hand, this might be the best deal for you. However, it’s important to know that if you do want one of these packages, every other adult in your room needs to buy one as well. And cruise ships are vigilant about making sure you’re not slipping drinks to someone who didn’t pay for one of these packages.

To calculate whether a drink package will save you money, determine the amount of alcoholic drinks, specialty non-alcoholic beverages, and bottled waters you think you will drink each day of the cruise. Then, look up how much those various beverages typically cost on the cruise line you’ll be on. For example, Royal Caribbean cocktails are typically $12 – $16, beer and wine is around $7 – $10 per glass, specialty non-alcoholic drinks range from $3 – $6, and bottled waters costs $3 – $4.

Now multiply the number of drinks you estimate you’ll have during one day, with the corresponding costs. Then multiply that number by the number of days you’ll be on the cruise. If that number is lower than the cost of the drink package, skip the package. If the number is higher, you’ll save money by purchasing the package, especially if the package is offered at a discounted rate online – and they usually are discounted up to a week or so before the cruise departs. Sometimes these packages are even 50% off if you jump on the deal early enough.

Note: Regular coffee, hot chocolate, juice and tap water (which we’ve always found perfectly good on cruise ships) is free.

10. Organize your own excursions.

Excursions through a cruise line often carry a hefty charge, and sometimes means you’ll be shuttled around with a large group of people. If you’re wanting to explore an area that is safe, speaks a language you’re fluent in, and provides an assortment of activities and tour companies, you could save money by organizing your own excursions.

To do this, go online, research the various activities or tours you’re interested in, and book your itinerary directly… if the costs you find are lower than what the cruise ship is charging. However, because you won’t have a cruise line employee monitoring your time during these excursions, make sure you’re hyper vigilant about getting back to the ship well before it departs, as they will leave you.

With that said, in some circumstances ponying up extra money for a cruise line excursion is worth the investment, and can provide access to amazing experiences you might have missed had you not been with the cruise line tour operators. For example, when we went on a Royal Caribbean excursion in Cienfuegos, Cuba, we were treated to a special performance by a group of actors and musicians – an amazing opportunity we wouldn’t of had if we hadn’t been with the cruise-affiliated outing.

Essentially, do you research and compare all the options before booking.

11. Bring your full allowance of alcohol.

Most cruise ships allow you to bring one bottle of wine or champagne, per adult. If you’re a wine or bubbly drinker, you might as well say yes to this allowance, as the booze you’ll buy on board will be much more expensive than the bottles you bring from home (unless you’ve decided to purchase a beverage package that includes alcohol.)

12. Bring specialty snacks with you, or purchase them at one of the ports.

If there are specialty snacks you can’t live without, and won’t be able to access for free on board, bring a stash in your luggage, as most cruise lines do not restrict food. Another option is to buy the snacks at one of the ports where you’ll stop. However, be sure to look up regulations the cruise line might have about fresh produce purchased in certain areas.

13. Bring enough clothes to last you the entire cruise.

Having your laundry done on a cruise ship is not cheap – we’re talking $1 – $2 to wash a pair of skivvies. Avoid this high cost by looking over your itinerary, and being intentional about the clothes you bring. For example, if you’ll be going on two different excursions that are almost sure to leave you sweaty and dirty, don’t count on being able to wear those particular outfits again on your trip.

However, some cruise ships have laundromats that cost about $6 per load (a steal compared to their fancy-laundry-services.) If your ship offers this convenience you can seriously cut back on luggage weight.

14. If you’ll need Internet access, buy the package ahead of time.

Many cruise lines offer around 25% off Internet packages bought through their website at least a day or so before the cruise departs – sometimes there’s bigger savings when you snag it even further in advance. And in regards to the high-speed Internet upgrade, skip it, as we’ve found that, on many ships, it’s not much faster than their standard Internet offering.

Note: Royal Caribbean offers one of the best Internet packages.
